May 22, 2009: SB 362 Voter ID Bill coming up for vote!

Dear fellow Democrat,

The Republican Voter ID bill, SB 362, has been placed on the Texas House calendar for this Saturday. It is critical that your State Representative and House Speaker Joe Straus hear your opposition to this unnecessary, partisan legislation.

Call your State Representative and let him or her know you oppose SB 362 because it has nothing to do with voter fraud and everything to do with using the reins of government to gain partisan advantage by making it harder for certain Texans to vote.

SB 362 is opposed by nonpartisan groups like the League of Women Voters and AARP.  The only form of voter fraud that a Voter ID bill would address - voter impersonation - is virtually non-existent. What's worse, Voter ID will take up time and create bitter division in our Texas House, making it harder to address legitimate issues like insurance reform, cutting college tuition and reining in skyrocketing utility rates.
House Speaker Joe Straus must decide whether it's worth undermining the House's ability to resolve urgent priorities in order to placate members of the extreme right wing, who value their narrow partisan agenda ahead of seeking progress for all Texans.

Call Speaker Straus' office and tell him to focus the House's efforts on real priorities instead of threatening Texans' right to vote.

Thank you for helping us protect Texans' voting rights - and thank you for being Democrats.
