May 21, 2009: Legislative Update

For the last week Democrats in Washington have been putting pressure on Gov. Perry and the use of federal stimulus funds.
As a result, in a meeting of the conference committee meeting yesterday morning, Sen. West and others question Sen. Ogden, chairman of the committee, about the use of these funds.
As an apparent result, in a meeting last evening of the conference committee, 100 million dollars was moved from the transportation funds to DPS.  This has been an ongoing problem using transportation funds to fund DPS, which has had its own management problems.
Another issue that the conference committee addressed was to approve a $500 one time payment to TRS and ERS retirees, subject to approval by the Attorney General.  If it does not pass the constitutional requirements the money would be deposited in the pension funds as a state contribution.
An additional note, the right for college students to carry concealed handguns in class is still alive at this time.  There is some speculation that the final bill will not make it through the final House vote.  Contact your state representative to express your views on this issue.  Remember the toll free number 1 888 836 8368.
Between now and June 1st the legislature is facing deadlines on a daily basis to complete their work.
Keep up the pressure
Thanks
