May 14, 2009: CHIP Vote

Please call your Representative TODAY and ask them to pass CSHB 2962 which creates a CHIP Buy-in program.

To get contact information for your Representative go to http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/.

The CHIP Buy-in program is for families earning between 200-300% of the federal poverty level ($44,100- $66,540 for a family of four).  The state estimates that 82,211 children would be enrolled in the CHIP Buy-in Program by 2011.

These families will be able to buy discounted CHIP coverage for their children.  They will pay a sliding scale premim based on the family income.  Premiums would be from $85-$120/month.  The bill would allow children losing CHIP or Medicaid due to higher family income to choose to buy CHIP at full cost (no cost to state budget).

(Thanks to Barb Walters, TDWCC President, for this information.)
